Dear Parents and Teachers:
As a part of the music curriculum, Grade 4 students will be learning to play the recorder in music class. Each child in Grade 4 receives the following as a free gift from the school:
- Recorder with yellow case and cleaning rod
- Recorder book
- Recorder practice CD (can stay at home)
To encourage practice and skill development, the recorder and materials will be sent home with your child. Since the recorder is not typically seen as a soothing and melodious instrument when a child is first learning to play, please show your child patience and encourage them to practice. Perhaps even consider learning the instrument with them!!
Your child is responsible for bringing the recorder and book to every music class!! Please remind him or her to keep the book and recorder in a safe place where they will remember to take it back to school. Lost or broken recorders and books will not be replaced by the school.
I am looking forward to helping this year’s group become awesome recorder players.
Is there a cost for the recorders?
- The School purchases the recorders and learning books for all grade 4 students as a gift. If those materials are lost, the family will be responsible for purchasing a replacement.
Does my child have to practice at home?
Many families do not like the soothing and melodious sound of the recorder. Students are cautioned to pick a good place and time to practice. With that said, in order to get better, students do need to practice. Families are encouraged to help foster the love of music in their child. Please help them with choosing an appropriate time and place to practice.
What is Recorder Karate?
Recorder Karate is a method of learning where the students receive coloured 'belts' to put on their recorder cases as they achieve levels of mastery in playing. There are 9 songs as part of this program which connect to 9 belt colours.
Mr. Richardson, as the local Recorder Master, will be testing and rewarding student achievement.

Does my child have to go through recorder testing
We will be practicing the recorder in class. It is expected that students should be able to attain the 4th degree or Green belt. Testing will not be done in front of the class, but will occur during lunch recess on selected days.
